Who am I?

My name is Juliette and I am a Registered nurse studying midwifery at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, which is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. As a settler who recently moved to British Columbia, I wanted to use this opportunity to deepen my understanding of the many colonial barriers that may be encountered by Aboriginal women during their pregnancies, particularly in rural British Columbia where I hope to practice upon completion of my program. The topics I introduce in the following subsections are not meant to be a comprehensive representation of the heterogeneity of the lived experiences of Canadian Aboriginal mothers. Further, I want to acknowledge that as someone who comes from a place of privilege, I am by no means an expert on the topics presented herein. Instead, it is my hope that what follows will be useful to someone like myself who is embarking on their journey to gaining a better appreciation  of the challenges faced by Aboriginal women, whether it is to better serve this population in their practice as a health care professional, or simply as someone who is striving to become a settler ally.

Thank you.
