Who am I?
My name is Aimee Lord and I am an undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia on exchange from my home university at the University of Melbourne, studying gender studies. Given that I am not from Canada and not familiar with its history and health practices, this project has been an informative and enlightening experience. It is important to acknowledge my privilege along with my lack of experience and knowledge regarding a subject which is enriched in so much history and that the implications of this history continue to play out in contemporary health care practices. Furthermore, it is important to acknowledge how colonization as a system of oppression is critical in understanding the disparities which exist in the relationship between gender and health. Lastly, my hope for this project is that we are able to contribute to positive and informative discourse regarding the maternal health and wellbeing of First Nations, Inuit, Metis, Aboriginal and Indigenous women throughout Canada.
